Credential verification is not the same as judging whether a credential fits a job

The fact

The 1EdTech Open Badges 3.0 specification distinguishes verification from validation. Verification checks whether a credential is an authentic and timely statement of the issuer or presenter, including proof and status where present. Validation asks whether the credential meets the verifier’s needs. [Source: 1EdTech, United States, final specification published 2024; accessed 5 October 2026.]

That distinction applies to credential technology, not to a hiring recommendation.

What this means for a seller

If you present a credential to an employer, make the verification route easy to find and understand exactly what the achievement says.

If you are hiring, do two separate checks: confirm the record is genuine, then decide whether the assessed capability matters to your vacancy. A real credential can still be irrelevant, and a relevant-sounding badge can still be too broad for the evidence behind it.
