The fact

IBM’s India announcement for the 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report, published 3 August 2026, reported an average organisational breach cost of INR 255 million, or INR 25.5 crore, up 15.9% from INR 220 million the previous year. [Source: IBM India, 3 August 2026.]

That is an average from the study sample, not a forecast of what one customer will lose.

What this means for a seller

Use the figure as market context, not as a fear-based return-on-investment calculation. A customer's exposure depends on its own environment, incident type, controls and operating consequences. Ask what the buyer already measures, then build the commercial case from customer evidence rather than multiplying a public average by an invented probability. Public averages are context, not a substitute for the buyer’s own risk model.
